Items the TSA Confiscates Most Often (and How to Pack Smarter)

Airport security is designed to keep everyone safe—but it can also be the fastest way to lose a favorite item (or delay your trip) if you pack the wrong thing.

Below are some of the items travelers most commonly have taken at TSA checkpoints, plus simple ways to avoid surprises so your journey starts stress-free.

1) Liquids, gels, and aerosols over the limit

The classic: oversized toiletries and drinks. Think full-size shampoo, large sunscreen, big perfume bottles, and that iced coffee you grabbed right before security.

Keep carry-on liquids in travel-size containers and place them together in an easy-to-reach clear bag.
Pack full-size toiletries in checked luggage when possible.
Buy beverages after you clear security.

2) Pocket knives, multi-tools, and sharp objects

Small blades are easy to forget—especially on keychains, in backpacks, or tucked into a toiletry kit.

Do a quick ‘pocket + bag sweep’ the night before you fly.
Move knives and multi-tools to checked luggage (or leave them at home).
Remember that some tools include hidden blades (box cutters, certain corkscrews).

3) Firearms parts and ammunition in carry-ons
